There really is Much Ado about Prescot

This summer I was delighted to go along to watch a fantastic outdoor performance of Much Ado About Nothing at Knowsley Hall.

The production was by acclaimed company the Lord Chamberlain’s Men and it was a real experience to watch something like this right here in Knowsley – especially in a place like Knowsley Hall with all its historical links with Shakespeare.

The show was a complete sell out and from what I could tell the 600-strong audience really enjoyed the experience, with many saying they’d love the opportunity to enjoy more similar events in the borough in future.

With the exciting plans that we have for a Shakespeare North playhouse in Prescot, hopefully that will come true very soon!

And for Prescot itself, these are very exciting times.

Prescot THI (townscape heritage initiative) work continues apace in the town. Historic buildings are being restored and empty units are being brought back into use. The team have recently been consulting residents about the future use of the public open space at Market Place, and plans for this will be drawn up soon. This will be in addition to new public art being commissioned for Prescot Centre – something else local people were recently asked to have their input into.

The Council recently launched a ‘Masterplan’ for Prescot which takes all the various pieces of work that are going on there and brings them together in a way which ensures everyone involved is working towards a common vision for the future of the town. The plan ensures we help the town grow and thrive, whilst making the most of the unique heritage that it has.

Of course the Shakespeare North theatre will be the icing on the cake of all of this. But it is by no means the only ambition we have for the town – I’m confident that we can transform the town centre into a thriving and lively destination with a multitude of cultural and leisure attractions in the coming years.

In fact there is so much to say about Prescot that the Knowsley Place Board, with whom I’m involved, will be holding its next ‘Knowsley Ambassadors’ event there on October 4. On the day, there will be the chance for anyone with an interest in Prescot to drop in and find out more about all the exciting things that are going on. Call into the Prescot Shopping Centre from 10.30am to 2pm – I think you’ll be amazed at just how much is happening!

It’s a really exciting time to live or invest in Prescot and I’m delighted with the progress that is being made in the town. Much more to come in future blogs, I’m sure!
